: Actually another variation on the use of this terms is to say that someone has designs on themselves, suggesting, they're conceited. Again, why designs?

"Design" meant a mental plan, an intention, before it meant anything to do with graphics. Check a good dictionary (one weighing more than a pound) for the historical sequence of meanings.
