: QUANGO stands for 'Quasi Autonomous Non Governmental Organisation'. Perhaps this helps explain the phrase. In Britain there are many such organisations, technically independent of Govt, but often influenced by it!

The point about QUANGOS is that they are directly or indirectly funded by the state, weld tremendous influence and are completely unaccountable thus thoroughly undemocratic.
