: The question is controversial. Many people say and write "their." I don't like it because "everyone" is singular and "their" is plural. I use "his or her." Proponents of "their" won't be stopped, though.

It is a matter of some controversy. You may find the Gender Neutral Pronoun FAQ interesting.

Almost anything goes these days, but someone will find fault no matter which option you choose. My opinion is the sentence should be reconstructed to avoid pronoun usage if at all possible. Everyone has a right to hold an opinion. :)
