: would like to know the origin and meaning of the phrase, "to hunt with the hounds and run with the hare."

It's usually pejorative and means to mix with people of completely opposing viewpoints, or more figuratively, to try to support both sides of an argument. Its origins are as they appear - from hunting with hounds and horses.
