Spitting image

The posted origin and derivation of "spitting image" is not accurate. The original phrase was "spirit and image." It was originally used in the following manner. When a person who resembled a deceased person was sighted, that person was said to possess the "spirit and image" of the deceased. Over the years, this has become shortened to "spitting image."
