: Surely this comes straight from the blacksmith? There's no point in striking cold iron, since it is most unlikely to change shape. Likewise, a situation must be 'grasped' at its most critical in order to influence the outcome.

Indeed, and striking iron that's cooled too much is liable to cause it to shatter.
