The Whole Nine Yards: Indian Perspective

Nine yards is the length of a traditional Indian saree, still worn by the Brahmins in Tamil Nadu in South India.

It is also the length of a traditional turban wrapped around the head, still worn by the men in Rajasthan in Western India.

That is one possible origin.
