I agree with the comments that this phrase involves some concept of fixity. I also associate the phrase with some concept of something on display. I am interested in the almost morbid or garish association of something (once) alive displayed in all its anatomical glory under/between glass. I know this association is a more specific, marginal, or loaded definition of the term, but is it within the range of definitions ot the phrase?
