It's a story from the Bible - The New Testament. See the Gospel of Luke chapter 15 verses 11-24.

It's a parable which reaffirms that eternal truth which children should never forget "Home is that place to which you may always return and they'll feed you, wash your dirty linen and put you up for the night."

As an aside it's just occurred to me that 'put you up' is a phrase of whose origins I know little.
