: I spent the majority of this afternoon going
: from quote site to quote site to links to rings
: trying to find 'united we stand divided we fall'.
: Apparently after that wasted effort,it isn't a
: direct quote. Can anyone tell me who coined the
: phrase? Is it the Readers Digest version of a
: quote by Tecumseh?

According to John Barlett's "Familiar Quotations," the phrase was part of "The Liberty Song" , written by John Dickinson (1732-1808):
Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all!
By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall.
