In my country, Chile (south america), we say ˝Where the devil lost his "poncho" (a thick blanket)˝.
It has to do, as you said, with a place that's just nowhere and happened quite a long time ago. After all, when was the last time or who has ever seen the devil shooting a woodpecker or loosing his blanket?
I though we only said that in here, it's nice to hear that expression from so far away.
