Background to John Quincy Adams' last words

In 1829, Adams was unexpectedly elected to serve as a member of the House of Representatives - the only ex-president to do this. He collapsed on the floor of the House with a stroke in 1848. He was carried to the Speaker's Room and died there two days later. His final words have also been recorded as:

"This is the end of the earth, but I am composed".
