: That exact wording isn't familiar to me, but it probably has the same meaning as "the short end of the stick": someone who gets the short end of the stick is getting a bad deal, is being cheated, is being put at a disadvantage.

Remember, too, the drawing of straws to divvy up unfavorable duty (such as cutting the barbed wire ahead of the general advance of troops during an offensive in the trench warfare of world war one)...the short straw lost out...he got the short end of the stick....
