: : Can anyone tell me the origin of the phrase "deep six"?
: : Is it a nautical term?

Yes!, It is a nautical reference.
The 'Six' is a reference to the depth of a typical land grave being six feet deep.
The 'Deep' part means that the ocean is a deep grave (obviously more than 6 feet), so that death at sea is getting the 'deep six'.
