: : "Clarisse paired up with Johnathan" means Clarisse joined Johnathan. The two of them work together in telling you all about it. They are partners. They form a pair. Another example: John and Mary might pair up to start a business.

: : "Some unknown words to check on" probably means some words to look up in a dictionary. To check on something is to inspect it or to verify it. A parent might phone home to check on the children, to see that they are safe.

A high-profile project is probably a work activity that many people will notice. I don't know "bags of character." You could try submitting the question again so that it will be at the top of the page and more people will see it.
