The wages of sin is death

I was trying to get to the root of this phrase from the bible. It would actually seem to be grammatically incorrect, i.e. "is" for he plural "wages". The meaning of "wages" here seems to be closer to "price" than the modern-day usual use of wages. Despite of or maybe because of all this, it's an amazingly resonant phrase. Anyone else care to comment?
