: My mother used to use this phrase when she was exasperated: "Lord-a-lovin". It seems like it must be a biblical reference. Does anyone know the specifics?

Over here in SE England people used to say "Lawks-a-mussy" for "Lord have mercy" and "Cor lummy" for "God love me". So my guess is that "Lord-a-lovin" may simply be a garbled form of "Lord love me!" (VSD)
