: The phrase "God willing and the creek dont rise" was a sign off every Sat night by one of the preformers on the Grand Ole Opry, WSM Nashville in the 1950s. I can't remember which one it was.
: Another sign off was "Dont get run over by a Mack truck" but I don't remember if it was the same guy.
In West Virginia we meant that literally. If the creek rose, people might not be able to cross and do whatever. I have a friend from the South who used to say if we don't get hit by a bus, we would do this or that. And I've heard, said of someone in bad shape, "You look like you've been hit by a Mack truck." And someone who was broad was said to look like a Mack truck with both doors open.
