Roll the hard six

What's the origin of the phase "Roll the hard six."?
I heard it on the TV show Battlestar Galactica. The character played by Edward James Olmos, Admiral William Adama, says this phrase a couple of times.
It means (I think) that only the best result will solve the matter.
