Trash the dress

With weddings recently the bride is supposed to "trash the dress". Supposedly in the ocean. I would like to know who started this and exactly the meaning behind it.

This is a folklore/sociology question, surely, and therefore OT for this forum. The meaning of the *phrase* is obvious: the use of "trash" as a verb meaning "ruin, spoil, reduce to trash" is well established.
