: : : : A few years back I posted this here on Phrase Finder:

: : : : Go all the way to Egery and back - A long distance. "I had to go all the way to Egery and back to get this dog." This refers to the community of Egeria in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

: : : : I was searching for various phrases online (I have time on my hands) and found several sites that identified this as a British expression. Anyone else heard this -- outside of West Virginia, I mean.

: : : Well I've never heard it - either in Ireland or the UK.

: : : DFG

: : It was one of two phrases that I was absolutely certain were only used in Raleigh County. I am disturbed.

: Any idea where and what 'Egery' is, or was?

: DFG

Absolutely. About 10 miles out of Beckley, in Raleigh County, W.Va., you either hang a left and go to White Oak Mountain. Or go straight for a long ways to the community of Egeria in Mercer County, W.Va. When I was growing up, people who went a long distance said, "I had to go all the way to Egery and back." There are several possibilities. 1. It really is a British expression and "we" adopted the phrase and the place name. 2. It is a really big coincidence. Or, 3. And this is a conspiracy theory, someone was phrase gathering, saw Egery here and assumed it was a British expression. And if I see on the Web that "Pinecrest yodel" is a British expression, I'm really going to get upset.
