in wagner's Ring Cycle, the 4th instalment ends with Brunhilde singing an apostrophe that signals the end of the world and the end of a 4 opera set of performances, each of which are several hours long.
the women who sing wagnerian operas have to be quite corpulent because the notes that wagner wrote require a large build to produce. thus brunhilde is the fat lady that sings and finally brings the end to a very very very long opera.
