One could assue its origins come from being in a sticky situation makes one sweat particularly here in the southern United States. Wiping ones face is a way starting out with a clean slate.
The origins may be from a New Orleans based rap movie entitled Baller Blockin' starring Juvenile and Lil' Wayne in which a police officer during a heated interrogation says "I think he's sweatin' a little bit...wipe his faaaace"
The phrase is actually somewhat popular in certain subcultures within the New Orleans community.
: Origin of 'wipe your face', as in breaking even?
