: : Where does the term cow 'pat' come from?

: A pat is a lump of soft material formed by patting it into shape - a pat of butter for example. A cow pat is just a bovine version of that.

When it lands splat, it's a pat. I read that stepping in a cow pat, in certain parts of the U.S., is called "cutting your foot." I'm guessing it's less embarrassing to say you've cut your foot rather than admit to stepping in cow poo.
