: Could you give me the origin of the expression, "stretch your dollar."?

This has been a common advertising phrase in the U.S. for as long as I can remember. You can "stretch your dollar," that is, make it go further or cover more goods, by spending it at our store, or during our special sale. It has also been used by friendly advisers in newspapers and on television telling us how to get the most from our dollars.

I don't know if Brits have ever been advised as to how they can "stretch their pound notes."
