: Don't really have a question, just replying to a 'phrase' on here about 'Little Audrey laughed and laughed'. An American history teacher from high school told our entire class one of these jokes and it went like this. One day Little Audrey and her mother were standing across the street from their house. Her mother was crying her eyes out, because their house had just burned to the ground. She turned to Little Audrey and said, "I'm sure glad you're father wasn't here to see this." Little Audrey just laughed and laughed and laughed, because she knew daddy had come home from work early and been upstairs asleep. That was way back in the early 60s when I heard that and have still remembered it and retold it to many people over the years. Hope you all enjoy it too. He also told us it was related to the fact that jokes seem to go in cycles with minor changes over the years, as in elephant, moron, polack, etc. jokes.

Little Audrey jokes. Along the same lines as cruel mommy jokes and dead baby jokes. I have a book that probably has some of those: "American Children's Folklore: A Book of Rhymes, Games, Jokes, Stories, Secret Languages, Beliefs and Camp Legends for Parents, Grandparents, Teachers, Counselors and All Adults Who Were Once Children" by Simon J. Bronner (August House Inc., Little Rock, Ark., 1988).
