: "The sky opened up" means there was a heavy rain. "Close" means the air is hot and humid, so that it feels dense and seems to trap you. Indoor air can also feel close; it makes people want to open windows. ~rb

I've more often heard "the heavens opened" with reference to a sudden heavy burst of rain. (VSD)
