: We often hear and read the expression, "caught in the crosshairs..." While the meaning seems to be caught in a difficult spot as in, "caught between a rock and a hard place" the derivation of this phrase is difficult to find. Any thoughts?
Crosshairs refers to a reticle (+) such as in the telescopic sight of a gun. Some impending disaster has you locked on target.
