: Hi. Where does the wrestling term "face-plant" originate from? I mean, what meaning of the verb "to plant" is used: original or derivative (to push down)?

Face plant n. Hitting the ground face first. Also: auger, digger, soil sample, spring planting. From the Mountain Bike Dictionary. In wrestling it seems to mean hitting anything (not just the ground) face first or the action of "giving" this to someone else. I think the verb "plant" means the same as when you plant a seed - you push it down into the ground. Pamela
