: Hi. Where does the wrestling term "face-plant" originate from? I mean, what meaning of the verb "to plant" is used: original or derivative (to push down)?

Face plant n. Hitting the ground face first. Also: auger, digger, soil sample, spring planting. From the Mountain Bike Dictionary. www.trails-edge.com/ bikedic.htm In wrestling it seems to mean hitting anything (not just the ground) face first or the action of "giving" this to someone else. I think the verb "plant" means the same as when you plant a seed - you push it down into the ground. Pamela
