: : In reply to hell's bell's and little fishes, my grandmother from TN said "ye gods and little gutter fishes."
: The most common version of the phrase is "ye gods and little fishes" (878 google hits to 19 for "hell's bells..." to 0 for your grandmbother's gutter variation) but there are a lot of possible combinations seeing some use - hell's bells and cockle shells, etc.
The most common variations are discussed in the Archive. Back up one page and type into the search box (top of the page), "little fishes." My personal favorite is "Ye cats and little fishes." I was surprised to see this variant used entirely unself-consciously on another message board to which I contribute.
