: I grew up in North Carolina and my Grandmother used to always say, "Well I swoney". Swoney is probably spelled wrong, but it is rhymes with money. I am very curious about its meaning and upon asking family member (Grandma is dead), they didn't even know what it means. However it isn't just some obscure family jargon, as I have meet others who had heard it but weren't sure either. I always assumed it meant something like I declare or holy cow. Any information or ideas would be much appreciated.

I am from West Virginia and we said that too. It means "I swear." See www.phrases.org.uk bulletin_board 21 messages 436.html
