: : : What does the phrase0 "crem del la creme" mean?
: : A little more careful typing, and an online dictionary would have said crème de la crème means sometning superlative, the best of the best, the top level of society. Literally, the cream of the cream.
: You're absolutely right, that's what it means. But you may well wonder, since nothing rises to the top of cream. It all has the same specific gravity and density. It's totally homogeneous.
Made famous, for me at least, by the Muriel Spark Book "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" - which was also made into a film. You can see a short in which "creme de la creme" occurs at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksetfly1pZsPamela
