Cover your ass

: My dad who was in the navy told me that he heard the expression "cover your ass' was originally given as advice to someone who if in the water during an explosion of a mine to protect from the great concussion and injury it could possibly cause to the ass, hmmmm... does anybody know anything about that?

I think he probably missed it by a few centuries.
