: I believe the author is Erma Bombeck, that wonderful lady who had 'drawers full' of these types of sayings etc. Sadly, she died of cancer but check her out, she has her own web site.

A quick check of Google news archive shows this phrase to predate Ms Bombeck by quite a bit, at least to 1897 possibly further.
