: I read the entry about raining cats and dogs; in Dutch we have saying: it's raining old wives. Nobody seems to know the background of that one either. Does it have a relative in the English language? Thanks.

Thank you for an interesting and intriguing saying. I've never seen the equivalent in English. I assume it's used when it's raining heavily; at least, that's the use of "It's raining cats and dogs."
