Spike on the curve

Hello:

I would like to know if there's anyone that can help me with this phrase: "spike on the curve".
I will provide you with the context:
"Before Akhenaten, Egyptian art had not changed much over the centuries. In Egypt, art was intended for eternity. Change was to be avoided.
A statue of the pharaoh in 2500 B.C. is not much different from one 2,000 years later.

Akhenaten was the one spike on the curve. "
