: No, not the movie! Coyote Ugly is also a play by Lynn Siefert. I'm thinking of directing it and am curious as to the meaning/origin behind this phrase. Since a play was titled this, as well as a movie, I figure there most be some origin of its meaning out there somewhere. If you have any info. I would be greatly appreciative.

It comes from a sexist joke. And I'm going to tell it badly because I only remember the punch line. Something about waking up the morning after with a woman so ugly, you chew your arm off to escape -- like a coyote chews his arm off when it is caught in a trap.
