I'd like to add, by way of balance, that the OVER-examined life is a bore. (And you can quote me on that one.) There are a small number of people who live tedious lives of perpetual examination. Self-indulgent, self-involved, selfish... however you characterize them, they stare at their own navels and sign up for the latest spiritual fad that promises them that they are indeed the still point in a turning universe. They quote Socrates to justify this full-time occupation, but in fact, people who spend LESS time on self-examination, who get involved with other people, tend to have more interesting selves to examine.
