: : : Can anyone tell me the meaning of the phrase "give sb a hip check". The sentence goes like this: Then he gave me a hip check that moved me over a couple of feet.
: : : Thanks

: : Sounds like a sports thing to me. Bumping someone on the basketball court. A sports fan will come along and tell you for sure.

: Originally from ice hockey ... but I've also heard it used in basketball, and rude teenage behavior on sidewalks. It's a lateral movement of the the hips, bumping into an opponent's hip, to impede progress or change the direction.

I should have mentioned that it's legal in hockey, illegal in basketball.
