: Anyone know the origin of the term "cluster f#ck"? It seems to be military in origin, or at least usage.
According to Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, Volume 1, A-G by J.E. Lighter, Random House, New York, 1994:
The noun clusterf*** meant orgy in the 1960s (cites use in 1966). The first recorded military use of the word is cited for 1969 and means "bungled or confused undertaking" or a "disorganized group of individuals" and bungler or idiot. The verb cluster-f*** meaning "to congregate in a disorganized or offensive manner" originated in the military also .
And I love when they say this: usually considered vulgar.
