: Does anyone know the source of the saying "Bringing home the silver" in regards to shooting competitions?

Medals awarded in many sports competitions, including Olympic shooting, are as follows:

1st place = gold
2nd place = silver
3rd place = bronze

"Bringing home the silver" means to come in second.
