: Need to know where "watching the sparrows fall" comes from. Context is "There are gods; there are plenty of them around, but I don't think they're watching the sparrows fall." Apparently this comes from Hamlet's "There's a special providence in the fall of a sparrow." But is that really true. Just before Hamlet says this he's talking about an augury. That to me doesn't seem like God watching sparrows fall. Sure it's some kind of divination, but is it really the same thing? If anyone has any clues, I'd like to hear them.

Matthew 10:29-31 (KJV) -
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
and Luke 12:6-7 -
Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
