there are many possibilities for this expression, many of which are too rude to tell to somebody doing a school project.

[the core of the expression is that if you are a sychophant to a particular person in power, when they fall from grace, you will be seen as part of their clique and be out of favour. powerful people assemble teams and when their faction is in the descendent, all members of their 'side' lose influence, even if there is no official change of role in the organisation.]
