: Without a context my guess it means getting a lesson on tolerance, the ability to accept and maybe understand the many nuances that humanity shows us.
Could "differences" be a typo for "defenses" in this phrase? Breaking through one's defenses would mean admitting or accepting one's weaknesses, or getting to the root cause of a problem in order to address it.
