: : I would love to know the origin of the phrase "chill your beans"
: : it is something I have said all my life and I dont know why.
: : its driving me and my work mates mad!!!

: Probably a variation of this:

: COOL BEANS -- The 1970s and 1980s: "Cool beans! I'm doing great! This expression was always used in response to the expression 'How are you?' regardless of the form in which the question was asked." And now.the 1990s: The term is listed under the subchapter "How sweet it is.slang terms of admiration.cool beans." "Flappers 2 Rappers: American Youth Slang" by Tom Dalzell (Merriam-Webster Inc., Springfield, Md., 1996).

Or, perhaps, related to "cool your jets," "cool off," "cool down," "chill out," take a chill pill," etc. Don't get so agitated.
