: They may not be "puzzled." You may in fact be the sole practitioner using this phrase in the whole wide world. As a consequence, if you stop using it, it will go away.

Use google to search for "shit a miata" and you will find a probable answer as the very first result - the 1990 movie "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane". Since the Miata was introduced in Feb. 1989, it's not likely to be much earlier.
