: In baseball the expression "the string is out" is used to mean a 3-2 count. Where is this from and what does it have to do with baseball? What string is out?

From a couple of sites I see it's basically deemed a reference to a pitcher, now down to the one pitch that will determine the outcome of the at-bat, being at the end of his rope, so to speak.
