: : BET YOU FIVE DOLLARS TO A GINGER CAKE - "You can go to any gathering of businessmen in Atlanta, and I'll bet you five dollars to a ginger cake that at least fifty percent of them will not be natives." Edward D. Smith, chairman of First National Bank of Atlanta. From "The Quotable South" compiled by Al Dixon, Hill Street Press Book, Atlanta, Ga., 2003.
: : (I got a new book.)
: Oddly it sounds more like a UK expression than one from the US South. I know there is gingerbread cake and cookies in the US, but I always heard the expression "ginger cake" used by people from the UK--friends and characters on BBC shows we get from the UK.
That's probably where we got it.
