The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) has this: "Thin ... b. transf. and fig. Wanting body or substance; unsubstantial; intangible. Also in phr. to vanish (melt, etc.) into thin air: to disappear completely from sight or existence (formerly only of spirits). ... [early citations:]
