: : I went to a wine-tasting yesterday and this song has been on my mind ever since. And I find myself wanting to know: what is "spo-dee-o-de"?
: : 23. Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee (McGee, Williams)
: : Sticks McGee -- Massive R&B hit whose inspiration came from a ribald military chant McGee was exposed to while in boot-camp. Honorable mention: Jerry Lee Lewis.
: : From the top drinking songs listed at the Modern Drunkard site: http://www.moderndrunkardmagazine.com/issues/11-02/11_02_top_songs.htm
: That's a common phrase from On the Road by Jack Kerouac. They drank a lot of "wine spo-dee-o-dee" and "bourbon-o-rooni" in the book. I'd guess it was a beat phrase, not invented by Kerouac himself.
Oops, I didn't notice the reference to the 1948 song, which pre-dates the book by about 10 years. At least I was right that Kerouac didn't invent it.
